In 2001 the Glasgow Open was organised by Graeme (Dusty) de St Croix. This has been supported over the years by too many people to count, but has been strongly supported by Wallace Fencing Academy and Glasgow West End Fencing Club. It continued to be run by him until 2019. Sadly Dusty passed away in December 2019, and the 2020 event was then cancelled indefinitely due to COVID-19. In 2023, after a few years without an event, Rhyan, Ruaridh, David, and Mark (alumni of Glasgow University Fencing Club) restarted the event with the support of Calum, Morag and everyone else that has made the event fantastic over the years.
The Glasgow Open aims to be an affordable, well-run event that allows people to compete at their best and to maximise their fencing time, with two rounds of poules and secondary competitions run in all 6 events. We want to have as many qualified referees as possible while keeping costs down for participants, so we are committed to developing local referees - indeed, in 2024 we ran the only practical refereeing exam in Scotland.
